Clean Air Zone checker
There is a quick online way to find out whether your vehicles will be allowed into low-emission zones when they launch, starting with Birmingham and Leeds.
Online vehicle checker: https://www.gov.uk/check-clean-air-zone-charge.
A new online service will help drivers and businesses to prepare for the introduction of Clean Air Zones that affect older fleet vehicles.
To use the vehicle checker, you just put in a vehicle registration number and it will tell you if your vehicle is compliant or if you might face a charge.
The first two cities to introduce clean air zone schemes outside London will be Leeds and Birmingham.
In Leeds, the city council is bringing in a ‘Class B’ Clean Air Zone later this year which will mean some older, polluting buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and HGVs will be charged to drive within the zone.
Birmingham City Council is bringing in a ‘Class D’ charging zone, which will also come into place later this year, and will also apply to some vans and private cars.
Bath and Sheffield are also planning to launch zones by 2021.
As well as the online vehicle checker, the government has already provided around £60 million to Leeds and Birmingham to retrofit buses with technology to lower emissions. It is also supporting businesses and drivers affected by the charge.
Remember, if you want to drive in London, you should check if you need to pay to drive in the Ultra Low Emission Zone on the Transport for London (TfL) website.
