Reflex Vehicle Hire and Avon Tyres support local charity

Reflex Vehicle Hire have provided Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikes with a free-of-charge vehicle for them to complete vital and lifesaving deliveries of urgent blood samples and other products to NHS hospitals and blood banks across the relevant regions.

Alongside this, Avon Tyres as one of Reflex Vehicle Hire’s suppliers have also partnered with the group by providing them with free tyres for all the motorcycles and the van.

Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikes is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers. They provide an out of hours service, ran completely by volunteers who rotate and cover 12-hour shifts.

The team at Reflex Vehicle Hire also nominated Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikes as the chosen charity at the Commercial Fleet Awards 2019. The charity was picked for the annual event which gave the group a chance to send a group of representatives along with one of the motorcycles from their fleet to encourage public and business donations.

The night was very successful for the charity, seeing them raise a generous £2,500, along with the offer of the free tyres from Avon Tyres.

“The group is operated 100% by volunteers and relies on public and private individual donations, as well as business funding to maintain the free service to our regions NHS hospitals and Air Ambulance. The donations we receive provide a huge boost in maintaining the fleet, whilst minimising the direct costs to our charity.”

About Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikes

Leicestershire & Rutland Blood Bikes is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers. The group follows the Blood Bike model operated across the UK by about 30 other Blood Bike groups, most of them affiliated to The Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes (NABB).

Many of the volunteers are keen motorcyclists but the group is not limited, with the group having two vans on fleet for members to use instead. The volunteers are not exhaustive of drivers, as the group also have fund raisers and telephone controllers.

What they do

The group provide a free, out-of-hours courier service to public health bodies in Leicestershire & Rutland between approximately 7pm and 6am Monday to Friday, with 24-hour cover at weekends and during public holidays. They also deliver blood products throughout the week to the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance based at East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire.

They work with hospitals to fulfil their transport needs in an efficient and timely manner. Getting to the destination safely is very important. On top of this, they collect donated breast milk and transport this to the Women’s Hospital in Birmingham for processing and subsequent distribution to neo-natal units.

What they transport

The blood bike groups support hospitals with the movement of blood, blood products, pathology samples, patient notes, x-rays, patient scans, surgical equipment, donated breast milk and anything else where there is an immediate requirement to transport.

All items are delivered to a professional standard with the objective to allow the NHS to reduce their transport costs and the money saved can be re-invested into direct patient care.
