A rush to recruit van drivers as the economy recovers this year could expose companies to increased risks and incident costs without careful risk management.

Modern technology, such as telematics and dashcams, will prove essential to ensuring that new employees are adhering to safe driving practices on the road, so companies are not left financially and legally exposed.

To make risk management systems effective, data and footage from vehicles needs to be monitored carefully and backed by rapid support for drivers, with a focus on training and advice.

A common difficulty facing managers is the delay between incidents occurring and the data or footage being reviewed to enable action to be taken, which can sometimes be weeks after the event.

Recent high-profile court cases have shown the dangers of not having adequate oversight of drivers, after a vehicle operator driver was jailed for causing a major crash while writing texts on his mobile phone.
