Workplace Charging Scheme

The Workplace Charging Scheme was set out by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) to enable businesses to install workplace vehicle charging points at a discounted price.

What is the Workplace Charging Scheme?

The Workplace Charging Scheme was set out by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) to enable businesses to install workplace vehicle charging points at a discounted price.

The grant supports organisations with the costs of purchasing and installing charging infrastructure at their offices to help fleets transition to electric vehicles.

How does the Workplace Charging Scheme work?

The Workplace Charging Scheme can cover up to 75% of the costs to install electric vehicle charge points.

The scheme is capped at:

  • £350 per socket
  • 40 sockets across all sites per applicant – for instance, if you would like to install them in 40 sites, you will have 1 socket available per site

Charge points are required to be installed by an OZEV authorised installer.

What is the eligibility for the Workplace Charging Scheme?

To be eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme there is some criteria you must meet.

Firstly, you must own the site or have consent from the landlord of the site to have the charge points installed. You must also have off-street parking for employee use and get a survey completed of the site by a charge point installer before you apply for the grant.

You may also use the grant for a charge point at a residential property, as long as the address is listed as your place of business with Companies House, but you must have off-street parking. If you are installing a charge point at your home address, you need to use an approved installer and have a charge point that is authorised for both residential and commercial use.

Businesses can also install charge points at their employee’s home for the use of a company vehicle if the employee cannot charge at work.

When does the Workplace Charging Scheme end?

The Workplace Charging Scheme is open for businesses to submit their applications up until 31st March 2025. Whilst funding is set to be available up until this date, the government can change or close the grant, so it is important you check it is still running before you apply.

How can I apply for the Workplace Charging Scheme?

Firstly you need to make sure you have one of the following to apply for the grant:

  • Companies House reference number
  • VAT registration number
  • A business rate (non-domestic) bill issued to you by your local council or by the Land and Property Services (LPS)

To apply for the grant, you need to fill out the Workplace Charging Scheme application form. Once your application has been reviewed and is successful, you will receive a voucher code via email within 5 working days.

The code is valid for 180 days and you can use this code with your authorised charge point installer. If your installation cannot be completed before your voucher expires, you must withdraw your application and reapply for a new voucher.

If some charge points from the voucher have been installed but some have not, you will need to reapply for a new voucher for the remaining installations to be completed.

You should also note that it is not possible to change the site where you applied to install the charge points as vouchers are non-transferable. If you need to change the site of the installation, you will need to withdraw your current voucher and reapply for a new voucher with the new site address.

When your charge point provider has installed the charge points, the installer will claim the grant. The charge point provider can then deduct the grant from your final invoice and you will then need to make payment. Your installer should not charge you before they have claimed the grant.

What if my application for the Workplace Charging Scheme is unsuccessful?

If your Workplace Charging Scheme application gets denied, you can appeal the decision by emailing the DVLA at workplacechargingscheme@dvla.gov.uk. However, note that the outcome of this appeal is final.
